Living in Los Angeles with a dog is an experience all its own. For those dog owners who have made the wise decision to travel outside of the concrete jungle with their furry friends, the endless trails and beautiful parks that Los Angeles has to offer can help bring your relationship with your pup to the next level. And you might be surprised by how many “Rover Friendly” restaurants this fine city has to offer.

Here are some of our staff favorites…

Runyon Canyon

A sunset hike at Runyon.

This is probably the most popular off-leash dog park in Los Angeles. If you want to get a workout, and throw your dog into the most intensive socialization program possible, this is the place for you! It can get pretty crowded, especially on the weekends. But your dog will have a blast, and the view can be spectacular.

Griffith Park

One of Griffith Park's stunning back trails.

Depending upon the time of day and where you are in this massive public park, you can most definitely find a beautiful spot to let your best pal run free. Griffith Park is the perfect spot for the adventurous dog owner. Take one of its many mountainside trails, or make your own. At the right time of year, you will easily find some nice ponds and waterfalls. Bring a snack for yourself, and some water for your dog. It’s easy to get lost in this place for hours.

Elysian Park

One of LA's best!

Talk about a gem! This is one of LA’s most underused canine resources. Not only do you get a spectacular view of Downtown LA and Dodger Stadium, but you and your pup will feel so secluded up in these hills you’ll forget you’re a mere 5 minutes from civilization. You’ll mostly have to keep your dog on a leash, but it’s a guaranteed good time. Word of advice, steer clear of Buena Vista Point and watch out for frisbee golfers!

Nichols Canyon

A secluded escape in the heart of Hollywood.

A definite staff favorite! Mostly because it is a great way to avoid the crowds at Runyon Canyon. Nichols Canyon is great for those of us with larger canine families. There is always an amazing view of those famous LA sunsets over Hollywood. Keep in mind, that it won’t just be your dog getting a workout; you definitely will work up a sweat hiking through the more advanced terrain at Nichols Canyon.

Urth Cafe

Yummy food, dog-friendly seating!

On any given weekday, you can find a BHSAH staffer grabbing a quick bite to go here. We love this place not only because of its vegetarian-friendly cuisine, but because they love our pets! There is an outdoor seating section dedicated especially for dogs. The servers are always quick with a pet and make your pooch feel welcome.

Joan’s on Third

We LOVE Joan!

We cannot say enough good things about Joan’s on Third. First of, Joan, the owner is a dog-lover and your pet will always be welcome in the lovely outdoor seating area. The food is delicious and there is always a fresh bowl of water and plenty of shade for your dog on those hot LA days. Stop buy for lunch and get the turkey meatloaf and maybe slip your pup a little taste. You’ll both be hooked.

Silverlake Dog Park

Play fetch into the late hours.

A modern day Dust Bowl! Silverlake Dog Park is another often visited spot by our staff. But get ready, your dog WILL get dirty! Especially during the summer when there are always big troughs full of water that the hounds LOVE to roll around and cool off in. This is ideal for owners who have long work hours and need a place where they can play with their pups after dark. There’s even a section for smaller dogs to run around free from the worry of getting trampled by a huge German Shepherd puppy.

Sunset Junction

A lazy afternoon at Sunset Junction

Sunset Blvd in Silverlake is lined with shops and restaurants that are just as happy to see your dog as they are to see you. Sit at Intelligentsia for a coffee and browse the Interweb while Fido mingles with the other Silverlake hipster hounds. Or sit outside at Flore and enjoy a gluten-free cupcake. This is a great area for you and your dog to people/pup watch. Perfect for those of you with the more easygoing type of canines.

The American Veterinary Medical Association and the American Veterinary Dental Society have designated February as Pet Dental Health Month to help educate owners of the importance of dental health.

Although dogs and cats rarely get cavities, the plaque and tartar that do form can cause gingivitis and periodontal disease. This can lead to tooth decay, bleeding gums and tooth loss. The bacteria that causes all this can travel through the bloodstream and eventually damage major organs, such as the liver, kidneys, and heart.

Healthy Canine Teeth

Severe Periodontal Disease

So what can you do about dental disease and your pet?

1. Take your pet to the Veterinarian for a dental exam.

2. Start a dental care regime at home.

3. Schedule regular checkups.

Sound familiar? It should; your pet’s dental health requires the same care as your own. Regular brushing, checkups, and dental cleanings are a necessary part of your pet’s healthy dental life. Call or come in today to get your pet on his or her way to a healthier, happier mouth!

Your pet will thank you!
